Music based

Music based programming.

Every station/show has a genre of music that they want to play, which engages and helps target a specific demographic, for example radio stations like Kerrang! Only play rock/heavy music for their specific rock fans. But ‘rock’ is still a broad label this is why specific shows will play different music, the late night show with Jonny Doom plays heavy metal and the afternoon show with Jake Thomson plays more classic/ ‘dad rock’.

Typical themed music based radio shows:

  • Top 40
  • Dedication shows
  • Guess the year
  • Request shows

Themed shows also help target a certain audience, and usually get the listeners involved which creates hype for the show.

I listened to a number of radio shows that play a similar genre of music to the show I want to record. One of the shows was Loz Guest for Kerrang! Radio.

The show was 4 hours long so I tuned in to the second half an hour to get a feel for the show in full flow. I also listened to Kate Lawler’s breakfast show to see how they differ.

I found that although the genre of music they play is both rock/metal, the breakfast show plays more upbeat music and Kate talks more about her day and also includes competition/listener involvement. Whereas the Loz Guest show which is played from 14:00-18:00 plays heavier music and talks more about gigs and nightlife.
