Analysis of Dispatches

Dispatches- Secrets of you missing mail

Dispaches is a standard 28 minute documentary shown on channel 4 on a Monday night, all of the issues bought up are relevant to the majority of the British population, the adverts entice people to watch the show through the use of rhetorical questions which the audience will want an answer to, this makes the programme accessible. At the beginning of each section of the episode there was #missingmail this hashtag creates contact with the audience letting them voice there own opinions publicly.

The style of this documentary is narrativisation, Morland Sanders presents and repots the piece in a formal and realistic way. Dispatchers has a mixture of reflexive and expository formats, this particular episode investigated the problems with private currier and postal services in the UK by revealing the authentic truth. As a viewer we know that this is the truth because of the evidence, in this case they used under cover reporters working on the depo floor of UK mail and as Posties for TNT giving the viewer ‘fly on the wall’ insight into the mistreatment of our fragile parcels and private mail.

I would say that the documentary is balanced and objective everything is based on fact backed up with strong evidence, assuring the audience that what they are saying is correct. They also give the companies which they are slating a chance to have there say on the issues bought up. This makes it impartial and again gives the audience a chance to create there own opinion on the subject. Aswell as talking to the company’s Sanders gathers alot of different opinions on the subject by talking to general members of the public that have been effected, a which representative, companys effected and consumer focus.

It is also clear that alot of second hand research has gone into this documentary as they use data and statistics for example

“Across the online shopping industry, problem deliverys cost company’s £851 million a year.”

This particular episode was relevant to us British because it hi-lights the fact that that in the next year the Royal Mail will be sold off, and we will be reliant on the private curriers such as UK Mail and TNT. The programme finishes with the question

“Will private company’s deliver a 1st class service for Britain?”

leaving the viewer to form there own opinion influenced by what they have just seen.
